A Day Making Newspaper Bags - MESKK

Contributed by a student from MESKK School, Bangalore

On Monday we were told to bring 10 sheets of paper, glue, cardboard and we were wondering what was it for. On Tuesday we bought all the materials and we were still wondering what was this all about.

Then suddenly our alumni Mr.Mohan came and told us that we were part of something big .We came to know that India was supporting the idea “Plastic Free World” in (the programmes name).India was going to make 100,000 paper bags for this and we were all very happy to know that we were going to make one of these bags .

Myself, Sharath and my friends Nikhil, Sachith, Hemanth, Hitesh, Siddanth and many others volunteered to take initiative for this activity. We being the volunteers were taught first how to do these paper bags so that we could teach others how to do it.

After our lunch break we all started to prepare the bags. While the activity was going on, Mr. Mohan came and told us about the competition between three classes. We were even more pumped with enthusiasm and started doing the bags more accurately. After we finished with the big bags, Mr.Mohan came and told us how to do smaller ones. So we started doing that and we kept on doing not even bothering about the time.

When we were finished we could not believe that in our class we had made 1000 bags and we were wondering how much could be the total. Then Mr.Mohan came and told us that we have beaten records of Schools in our locality which were also participating. All the students had great fun and we also enjoyed a lot. We like to thank Mr.Mohan and his friends for giving us a part in this Mega Project.

IU Newspaper Bag Project Report - Part 2

IU NPB 20 Nov Report! - Part 1

A plastic cover lies in the hall. A lady sitting few meters away rushes there, blames the person who put it there and throws it in the dustbin. A piece of plastic lies on the road, thousands walk the way giving it a glance & leaving it there.

A million plastic bags have accumulated this way in every corner of the world. It's not just about ignorance but also about the usage, the plastic that suffocates the soil, the animals that consume it and the plants who share this earth with humans.

Everyone's responsibility is becoming No one's responsibility.

We pulled up our sleeves and sung the slogan of "Use Less Platics", marching the roads of our country  announcing an exciting target of Making 1 Lakh Newspaper Bags on 20th Nov, 2012.
A team of 10 set out to make the unbelievably huge target happen, spear-headed by Ms. Beena Chowdary, Chief Volunteering Head, IU Newspaper Bag Campaign, mentored and lead by Mr. Sujit Lalwani, Founder & Director, Inspiration Unlimited. We Begun and the people across the country joined us.

16 Schools/Colleges/Institutions from Bangalore joined hands with us to participate in the Making of Newspaper Bags. More than 3700 students were involved in making Bags of Various sizes while many students also displayed their artistic and creative way of making it as well. Volunteers from Ethiopian Business Center from Meghalaya, Youth wing of Assam Congress NSUI learned to make and made more than 100 students make Newspaper Bags on the same day.

A total of 100 students and 30 volunteers from different youth groups and colleges joined the global campaign of making Newspaper Bags. Volunteers from Alive Creations, Being Indian Foundation, We4U, Bakul foundation, NMYS & YDF and few others from BJB college, IMS, Utkal University and CSSR came forward to be a part of the project. Ms Preeti Permanik and BP Paikaray from BJEM School participated during the workshop and made the students aware about the adverse impacts of using plastics. BJEM school played a major part in the successful execution of the project. A total of 100 bags were made within 2 hours by the kids. The Newspaper Bags will be distributed in major market areas to create awareness and encourage the usage of Newspaper Bags.

The IU-NPB 20 Nov Project ended with more than 70,000+ bags being made and distributed in and around the country with youngsters shouting the slogan of "Use Less Plastics". We not just made but replaced the equal number of Plastic Bags.

Bag the Paper!

An accidental invention 144 years back lead to the creation of one of the most used material Plastics which
not just made things easy for people but lead to a creation of a new age altogether-The Plastics Age! The plastic industry has been ever growing at an increasing rate with it’s reach in every sector a man takes his step. But what it ate away is a whole chunk of green earth leading to issues in sectors of Health, Environment & Ecosystem.
“We do not inherit earth from our ancestors we borrow it from our children. “, said a holy man

which reverberates again to this day. Burdened with issues is Mother Earth, silent and still, waiting for it's beings to take action and save themselves. It is a grim fact that if we continue using things that ease our way we might end up eating ourselves.

Look around and count the number of plastics to check the levels of damage in society. Alarming?
Yes, There is a need to shift!

IU takes it's step in creating a greener tomorrow with a vision to reduce the usage of Plastics.
November 20th marks IU Newspaper Bag Campaign that will cover the making of 1 Lakh Newspaper Bags around the world. The trend setters, the change makers, the supporters for the Go-Green initiative engage in making Newspaper Bags around the World. The bags made would be distributed in the society with the message “Use Less Plastics”. All it takes is a commitment and a little time of you in reaching out to the right and spreading the message.

It all starts from one. Are you the one from your society who is ready to create the change?

The first ever successful project of IUNewspaperBAG at KLE international School!

Taking the first step towards sustainable development for a greener tomorrow, we at Inspiration Unlimited are observing our First ever large scale project of IUNewspaperBAG:
"Let's reduce a Plastic BAG!" Day, on 4th and 5th of November, 2011.

KLE International School, Rajajinagar, Bangalore with the support of its 50 teachers and over 500 students on 4th Of November are joining hands with us, to make over 2000 Newspaper Bags. The teachers' support was immense. Ms. Basanthi Vaishnav played a key role from Inspiration Unlimited team in supporting the cause!

“This is a project that I would never say no to. School life is the part that one cherishes all his life and this is what will one his share of experiential earning “-says KLE school Principal Ms. Geetika Kharola. We would like to thank the Principal and staff of KLE International school for having supported us to make this vision a tangible reality.

Brindavan College Students from Bangalore, India have already taken up the initiative towards November 5th Large scale newspaper bag production. More than 300 bags are already done!

For all those who endorse the idea, you can either send us newspapers or bags that you make or join hands on November 4th & 5th. We don’t say NO PLASTICS. We understand it's required. But at least we can reduce! Can't we?

IU News Paper BAG - Brief UP!

The concept is an extension of a simple thought that ran in the mind of a physiotherapist – Dr. Surendra Iyer, from Nepal, when he thought of indulging into some enterprising work to run his daily expenses for himself besides his normal pay that he anyways earnt, to give self a motivational booster of the self dependent feel

The idea took an extension from a small activity to becoming a revolutionary project, under the leadership of the One Young World Ambassador Sujit Lalwani, who gave it a definition that it carries today which makes it stand as an upcoming global revolution. The concept is extremely simple and largely impacting, the grounds on which the OYW Ambassador always chooses to work.

The sagacious planning and calculation of all the impacts this project can have is something that gives a unique touch to this project of being able to serve multiple purposes, and still be extremely simple in it’s execution.

The objectives being served:
1. Saving Trees: As it makes use of already printed Newspaper, it avoids making of fresh paper, and avoids cutting of trees. “A tree not cut, is a tree planted”. In a world like today, where usage of all resources is so high, avoiding wastage is in itself creating resource.

2. It’s another name and direct support to IU Eco-division which wants to mitigate the use of Plastics. It’s a second name for the campaign of IU “Use less of Plastics!”

3. Engaging a large human resource into a simple constructive activity, that impacts society positively, and hence brings in the brotherhood attitudes amongst people. We are sure it would end up inspiring scores of others to think on these lines.

4. Encouraging and setting a new trend of using paper bags and hence serving as an inspiration for people to create taste from waste, on a large scale. A movement which involves the best blood of the world endorsing the idea, executing & promoting it.

5. A greener and a better world for all.

The only expectation we have from you is to directly involve first hand into this initiative of ours. For more info on understanding how to make these bags, Visit www.youtube.com/iuindiaonline and type “How to make IU Newspaper BAGs?”

Thank you
